How to Choose a Contractor for a Bathroom Remodel

A bathroom may be one of the smaller rooms in a home, but remodeling one can involve demolition, plumbing, electrical work, ventilation, waterproofing, tile, cabinetry and finish work in a very concentrated space.

Look beyond the total price

Two proposals can show different totals because they may not include the same work, materials or allowances. Compare the scope—not just the number at the bottom.

Ask what is included

A clear proposal should identify the work being performed and explain important material allowances or owner-supplied items.

Ask about waterproofing and underlying conditions

Showers and wet areas require careful construction. Existing bathrooms can also conceal deterioration or other conditions that only become visible after demolition.

Verify the contractor

Homeowners should verify appropriate licensing and insurance and review relevant project experience before hiring.

Discuss communication and changes

Before construction begins, understand how questions, selections and changes to the original scope will be handled.

Documents worth reviewing

Ask for a written proposal that identifies demolition, preparation, waterproofing, plumbing, electrical work, ventilation, tile, fixtures, glass, painting, cleanup and material allowances. Confirm the contractor’s legal business name, applicable license and insurance information using the appropriate official sources.

Before work begins, understand the payment schedule, anticipated sequence, responsibility for product orders and the process for changes. A clear contract cannot predict every concealed condition in an existing bathroom, but it should explain how additional work will be evaluated and authorized.
