Making Room for Baby with a Leak-Free Bathroom Remodel

Project by Surdus Remodeling

This bathroom project involved several problems at once: mold behind the bathroom wall, a leak under the tub, and damaged building materials. Because the homeowners were expecting a baby, completing the work promptly was especially important to them.

Project Details

The Surdus team gutted the bathroom to the studs and traced the source of the water intrusion. The leak originated at an exterior wall, so a section of exterior siding was replaced. Rotten studs and joists were also replaced before the bathroom was rebuilt with new drywall, tub, fixtures and finishes.

The project was completed on schedule, several weeks before the baby was due.

Quality Check

After the work was substantially complete, Elijah returned for a final inspection. The client testimonial noted that he identified a few minor items the homeowners had not noticed themselves, and the crew returned the next business day to address them.

What homeowners can learn from this project

Water entering from outside the bathroom can damage framing and finishes even when the visible symptoms appear near a tub. Tracing the source before rebuilding allowed the exterior siding, rotten studs and joists to be addressed instead of covering the damage with new materials.

The final inspection was also an important part of the process. A remodel should include a walkthrough to identify remaining adjustments, confirm operation of fixtures and document completion items. Correcting small issues promptly helps the finished room perform as intended after the main construction work is done.
