A Basement Renovation Makes a Home in Takoma Park More Functional
Project by Surdus Remodeling • Takoma Park, Maryland
This Takoma Park basement had become cluttered and underused, and the homeowners wanted a more organized, functional lower level with a bedroom, laundry room, bathroom, closet and code-compliant egress.
The Remodeling Process
We gutted the basement while preserving an original knotty-pine wall the homeowners wanted to keep because it matched the character of the house. The concrete floor was uneven, so leveling cement was poured before the new finishes went in.
The concrete floor was opened for new bathroom plumbing. New framed walls, electrical circuits and ductwork were installed, and a full bathroom was built with a bathtub, toilet, mirror and vanity.
A new bedroom with a built-in closet was created. Because the existing bedroom window did not meet the required egress conditions, a larger egress window was installed, bringing more daylight into the room.
The finished basement also included an open TV/living area, a laundry room with washer, dryer and utility sink, a new exterior wood door, and a tiled entry area to help protect the new Berber carpet from dirt and moisture.
The completed renovation gave the homeowners substantially more usable and organized living space.
