Tub to Walk-in Shower Conversion Gives Surdus Clients More Space

These Kensington homeowners rarely used their bathtub, while the existing corner shower felt too small for the way they wanted to use the bathroom. The remodel replaced the tub area with a larger walk-in shower.

Adapting the design to existing conditions

The original plan called for one large horizontal recessed niche. After demolition exposed wiring, ductwork and plumbing in the wall, the design was adjusted to three smaller niches rather than forcing the original layout around concealed building systems.

The new shower was built with a Wedi waterproofing system and included a bench. The completed bathroom also included new tile, a more open vanity arrangement with a separate makeup area, lighting and bathroom accessories.

Planning a similar conversion

Before removing a bathtub, consider whether another tub remains in the home and how the household may use it. Measure the proposed shower, entry and glass configuration, then coordinate the drain, valve, handheld fixture, bench and storage features with the waterproofing system.

This project demonstrates the value of flexibility. The planned large niche conflicted with concealed wiring, ductwork and plumbing, so three smaller niches provided storage without forcing an impractical change to those systems. Existing conditions can influence the final design even when the project is carefully planned.
