Kitchen Sink Types and Uses

The kitchen sink is a heavily used work area. Size, mounting style, bowl configuration, material, faucet choice and cabinet dimensions should be planned together.

Single-bowl sinks

A large single bowl can provide room for washing larger cookware and may work well for homeowners who prefer one uninterrupted basin.

Double-bowl sinks

Two bowls can separate tasks, but the divider reduces the dimensions of each individual basin. The right configuration depends on how the homeowner cooks and cleans.

Undermount and top-mount sinks

Mounting style affects appearance, countertop detailing and installation. Countertop material should be considered when choosing the sink.

Farmhouse and apron-front sinks

Apron-front sinks can become a strong design feature but require compatible cabinetry and careful planning before countertop fabrication.

Plan the surrounding work area

Dishwashers, trash storage, faucets, disposals and countertop work zones should be coordinated with the sink location rather than treated as separate decisions.

Confirm specifications before cabinets are ordered

The sink model determines the required cabinet width, bowl depth and installation details. Verify whether the faucet, soap dispenser, filtered-water tap, disposal or air gap requires additional openings. Deep bowls can also affect disposal height and drain connections inside the cabinet.

For undermount and apron-front sinks, coordinate the template and support requirements with the cabinet installer and countertop fabricator. Decide where the dishwasher and trash storage will sit relative to the sink. Final selections made early allow cabinetry, plumbing and countertops to be planned together instead of modified after fabrication.
